Ok so if you've been to the Border's Books in Union City or probably just about anywhere else you've noticed the trend towards stocking more and more manga TPB and less U.S. graphic novels in response to the droves of highschool kids that come and read the import inventory wall-to-wall... for the longest time I was totally avoiding their expanding turf like the plague, and resenting the store's shift in focus away from the comics I've known and loved. I finally broke down the other day and picked up Naruto Vol. 1, with no idea what it was exactly about. I actually covered it with a DVD I was gonna buy when I walked to the counter. Some of the early story pacing was a little awkward, and it took me a minute to get used to the right-to-left panels and binding, but once I adjusted... WOW. It really does deserve the hype as both a manga and anime, very original and engaging concept and story. The closest way I could describe this story is like if Harry Potter was about Ninjutsu instead of Wizardry, with something closer to Ron Weasley (occasional comic relief) as the main character swapped with a sidekick Harry. Oh yeah, and a lot of fantasy/martial arts violence. In fact, I think Naruto might actually tackle issues of duty, life/death and camaraderie more directly than HP because of the drastic circumstances it puts its own 2 boys / 1 girl student trio through.
Now to figure out where I can get the anime...
